Afika M | Female Entrepreneur 31 year old Afika Mbandazayo, 2ndof 5 children, born in the eTholeni village in Butterworth has created a nationally recognised brand of hair and beauty services. After matriculating at Westbank High school in East London, Afika went on to study towards an LLB degree at UNISA, attending lectures at the Pretoria campus. Though she had a liking for the law Afika knew her destiny lay elsewhere âIâd walk onto campus and all Iâd notice would be people whoâs hair needs to be doneâ Afika says as she reminisces. Her love for doing hair started back home where sheâd watch her sister do peopleâs hair for pocket money, she followed suit and realised she had quite a talent. Afika dropped out of law school a year later and returned to East London where she lived with her childhood best friend in Belgravia, and started operating her hair business there. Because many people didnât know about her little business, she took it upon herself to market her business âI started by going door to door and offering my services to people around the complex, then progressed to handing out flyers around Southernwoodâ said the budding entrepreneur When […]

MASTERING PROCESS MANAGEMENT TO SAVE A SMALL BUSINESS FROM LOSSES

MASTERING PROCESS MANAGEMENT TO SAVE A SMALL BUSINESS FROM LOSSES Iâve been there. You open your small business â it has huge potential. You just need to work hard so you afford rental space, generate enough revenue so you afford enough staff and then eventually you can stop working to grow your business full time. Maybe you have a job or you do not. Say you have a job. The orders come in streaming! Business is good â there clearly is a need for your product! After work you tend to the deliveries and satisfy your clients. But a lot falls through the cracks (you are working after all). Clients start calling you with cancellations as they found another supplier. You are frustrated, you cannot afford an assistant just yet and your dream is falling by the wayside! Oops another failed start-up. As start-ups have high failure rates, this week we look at what small businesses in their formative stages can do to minimise the risk of losses and mistakes so that they grow without hitting the already strained budget. The Mustard

Words, we use them every day but often, we donât give them that much thought. The thing about words is that they cause a reaction in us, whether itâs good or bad. They make us feel things and they leave us with impressions about people, places and things. When they are used on their own itâs hard to make sense of them but when you use them together, they tell a story. Here are a few words that may seem unrelated but together tell a story; Jazzy, rustic, mustard, sustainable, chilled, contemporary, casual, recycle, art. These are just some of the words that one can use to describe different aspects of the same place, The Mustard: a jazzy and rustic casual dining restaurant located in Vincent, East London. They celebrated their first birthday on April 14 and this is just the beginning. They hope to have their launch soon in celebration of their first birthday but also to introduce themselves to the East London community. Who is The Mustard? The mustard is a rustic and contemporary dining restaurant with chilled vibes. As you walk in through their doors, you are met with the comfortability and subtle cosiness of the main […]
